I'm a high energy person. I have founded two successful rescue missions in 15 years. It's been a lot of hard work - early mornings, late nights, weekends. Like a for-profit entrepreneur, it means wearing many hats and burning the midnight oil.
Had I finally reached my limit? Was I burning out? Was I tool old? I was getting tired a lot. I had lost 30 pounds, but then my weight wouldn't budge. So, I began an exercise program. For 3 months I worked my way up to 40 minutes a day on my kijiji elliptical. And my bedtimes got earlier and earlier. What the what what?
I went to my doctor for another matter, and she insisted on having me get blood work or she would't treat me. She was horrified I hadn't been to the doctor in years. When she asked me why, I replied, "I haven't been sick!" She must have decided to take me on as a project, because she agreed to be my regular doctor, even though she wasn't currently accepting patients. Either that, or she figured I wouldn't really be adding to her workload. Boy was she surprised.
Surprise! You have hypothyroidism!
"Have you been tired?" she asked.
"You have no idea."
"Yes, I kind of do. Your numbers are off the charts."
So, what I thought would be the 8 week nap has turned into the big sleep.
During this process, the doctor has also discovered my iron levels are so low they are off the charts in zombie mode. So, while my thyroid has almost normalized, the exhaustion remains... for now.
I'm thankful that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm probably on my maintenance dose of thyroid medication now. So, maybe THIS year, by summer time, I'll be out and about visiting friends during evenings and weekends.
Now, if you'll excuse me, it's time for my nap.
Dear Mrs. Porter, your blog is very helpful. In my view, iron medication works. My son who has(had) high energy has symptoms identical to yours. He doesn't explain his symptoms in detail to his doctor. We were aware that he had a thyroid condition and has taken medication for many years. Are individuals ashamed to admit fatigue or is it just my relative?
ReplyDeleteI think some of us don't report it because we don't connect it to a real illness. It's such a vague symptom that it is easy to blame on other things, such as insomnia, or an extra-hard workout. Thank you for reading my blog!
